Playtime just got an upgrade.

Women's Health may earn commission from the links on this page, but we only feature products we believe in. Why Trust Us?

So, you’re beginning the exciting-yet-daunting process of shopping for your new favorite vibrator. The good news: In 2024, your options are pretty much limitless, from sleek wands to high-tech clitoral suction vibes to hands-free toys. And Women’s Health has the editor-tested, sex therapist-approved rundown of the best vibrators of all time.

A vibrator is one of the most important purchases you can make for your sexual health, which is “an essential piece of our overall health,” says somatic therapist and sex therapist Holly Richmond, PhD, associate director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. “Masturbation has a lot of health benefits beyond just pleasure.”

Orgasms, specifically, can boost your mood, improve your quality of sleep, and even improve immune function, Richmond adds. And “the research is very clear: Women who use vibrators have easier and more frequent orgasms,” says psychologist and sex therapist Laurie Mintz, PhD, author of Becoming Cliterate. Why? Vulvas have “special receptors for vibrations,” Mintz explains, so using a vibrator can actually provide a type of stimulation that your vulva loves but can’t get from a human hand, tongue, or penis. Plus, from a medical standpoint, vibrators work mechanically by enhancing blood flow and relaxing muscles—basically, you reap the benefits of a massage on your erectile tissue.

So, how do you know which product to pick? Women’s Health consulted four sex therapists and an OB-GYN, and 13 editors and contributors anonymously tested more than 50 of the buzziest vibrators (pun intended, obviously) to find the 7 best bedside companions—and a few alternatives—for every sensation preference, budget, and sexual need.

Read on for more info about WH’s top choices, along with everything you need to know about shopping for a vibrator—plus, expert tips on how to clean, use, and safely store your sex toy.

Lelo is generally considered the gold standard of sex toy brands, and experts agree. “Not only are they beautiful, but they seem to be curved very nicely to fit contours of the body,” says sex therapist Debra Laino, author of The Missing Link. Lelo's vibrators are designed to feel like a luxurious experience, and no product delivers on this promise more than the Lelo Enigma Double Sonic, the latest in the brand's line of dual stimulation vibrators.

Like the Lelo Enigma and Enigma Wave, this newest toy offers powerful sonic wave stimulation on the clitoris. But it also features DeepSonic™ technology, designed to stimulate the orgasmically potent A-spot (sometimes called the female prostate), located slightly behind the G-spot. Believe the hype: One Women’s Health editor tested the toy and said, “I've never experienced a vibrator like this before. It gave me one of my most powerful—and long-lasting—orgasms ever.”

A “longtime fan of clitoral suction vibes,” our tester was surprised by just how deep she felt the pulsing sonic waves stimulate her clit. “We so often think of the clit as just that little nub on the outside of our body, but this vibrator gets deep into the clitoral tissue—I felt it all over,” they said.

And while our tester acknowledged that “there was a bit of a learning curve” to positioning the Enigma Double Sonic's internal arm against her A-spot, once it was properly inserted, the results were explosive. “Anyone who is interested in squirting should try this vibrator,” they said. “I came so hard from both the A-spot and clitoral stimulation—it was unlike any other orgasm I've ever had. I can't wait to try it again.”

The reviewer also noted that they liked how easy it was to use the toy's three buttons to turn it on/off and increase/decrease speed. “I feel like you could easily reach orgasm on the lowest speed, but it was nice to be able to increase the sensation easily, and without worrying about accidentally pressing a button that would trigger a pattern that my body might not respond to,” they said. “I tend to like consistent physical sensation, so I usually don't use the different pattern settings anyway.” Those who do, however, can sync the Enigma Double Sonic with the Lelo app to unlock two exclusive modes, "Finish Me Off" and "Out of Control," as well as experiment with independent motor control.

Our reviewer did note that the Enigma Double Sonic was “a bit hard to clean” and they needed to use lube in order to insert the A-spot stimulator, but they ultimately still preferred this over all the other vibrators they tested.

If you’re new to vibrators, you might want to try a bullet, says Laino. In addition to being small (hence the name), these are generally quiet, easy to use, and in the cause of the Maude Vibe, affordable. Of the pint-sized vibrators our testers reviewed, they enjoyed the discreetness and pinpointed precision of the We-Vibe Tango X and Je Joue Duet, but found Maude’s flagship bullet vibrator packed the largest punch.

One reviewer called this their “new go-to bullet” and specifically praised the unusual appearance of the Maude Vibe. “It has a unique, almost cone-like shape, which allowed me to mix up the way I used it,” they said. “The tip is perfect for pinpointed clitoral stimulation, but if you’re not in the mood for that kind of precision, the entire toy vibrates, so you can also press the ‘longer’ side against your body. It’s not quite big enough to be classified as an internal vibrator, but you can put it inside you, which is also a plus.” Ultimately, they found this toy to be more versatile than other bullets—and extremely cost-effective, at just $49. “I've had a hard time finding high-quality vibrators under $80 or $100, but this one is discreet, powerful, and feels extremely luxurious,” they said.

Our tester also praised how powerful (yet quiet!) the Maude Vibe is. That said, it has only three speeds—so if you like to play with patterns during your pleasure sesh, opt for the Je Joue Duet (which features five speeds and seven patterns), or another type of toy altogether. “Personally, I don’t like tons of speed options. I find it hard to switch through all of them, so [the Maude Vibe’s settings] weren’t a ‘con’ for me,” said the reviewer. “And I definitely didn’t get bored with this toy, thanks to how powerful the three speeds are, as well as how versatile it is.”

“If you have your best orgasms when there is something in your vagina and something touching your clitoris, a rabbit is going to be for you,” says Richmond. These toys feature two arms: one that goes inside of you, and a second that rests against your clitoris. Usually, the two arms have different speeds and motions, Richmond adds, which can allow you to mix things up during playtime. Of all the rabbit vibrators that Women’s Health tested, our editors found the We-Vibe Nova 2 to be the top choice—in fact, one tester described it as their “absolute favorite vibrator of all time.”

“What I like about the We-Vibe Nova is that both its internal and external arms are deeply curved. So the part that goes inside is pretty much guaranteed to hit my G-spot and the outside part never loses contact with my clit, no matter how much I move around,” our reviewer said. They also appreciated that the internal arm is tapered, making it easier to insert than rabbits that are extremely girthy.

According to our reviewer, one of the Nova 2’s most underrated features is the placement of its buttons. Like many other vibrators, this one has a + button to increase the vibration speed and a - button to decrease the speed or turn it off. “What’s cool is that We-Vibe puts the + button underneath the - button if you’re looking at the vibrator straight-on,” they wrote. “But since you have to turn the vibrator ‘upside down’ to use it, that makes the buttons much more intuitive when you can’t actually see them.”

Finally, WH’s reviewer praised We-Vibe’s connected app, which allows users to control their toy (or a partner’s toy) from their phone, and even create new patterns.

Wand vibrators are a favorite for many people with vulvas, simply because they offer “pretty intense” sensations, says Richmond. And WH’s reviewers agree that the Magic Wand is the best of the best, thanks to its unparalleled power.

One Women’s Health editor described the Magic Wand Rechargeable as “the gold standard” of wand vibrators. “The Magic Wand is the only vibrator that lives full-time on my nightstand, and no matter how many other toys I try, nothing can replace it,” they said. “The strength of this vibrator is its strong suit—so much so that I never need the highest level. Even on the second setting, I can use this vibe through my jeans and still get the job done.”

Our tester also loved using the Magic Wand with a partner. “The long handle makes it easy to position between bodies during partnered sex, and the large head makes it easy for another person to aim without worrying about getting to the exact right spot,” they added. They did initially worry that the rechargeable model wouldn’t be as strong as the Magic Wand Original, but noted that “each charge lasts for ages,” and you can also use the vibrator while it’s plugged in.

That said, another Women’s Health tester found this vibrator to be too strong. “I can see why the Magic Wand is a classic. It’s a real workhorse of a vibrator,” they said. “But for me, it felt a little clunky and too intense.” The Magic Wand also isn’t waterproof—so if you’re looking for a vibrator that can get wet and wild (and don’t mind vibrations that are a little less powerful), consider another option, like the Dame Com.

Suction vibrators aren’t for everyone, notes Richmond. But if you like the feeling of receiving oral sex, you’ll want to invest in one of these high-tech toys. They use sonic air technology to stimulate the clitoris through pulsations as opposed to vibrations. This sensation often feels like receiving oral sex, says Richmond, but is less ideal if you like to grind against your toy.

Ultimately, WH’s reviewers found the Womanizer Premium 2 to be the best and most discreet suction vibrator on the market. “The Womanizer Premium 2 is super easy to use and intuitive, and I liked the patterns. The feel was also very luxurious,” said one reviewer.

They also praised Womanizer’s unique Smart Silence feature, which prompts the toy to turn on and off automatically, depending on whether it’s pressed to (or removed from) a person’s body: “I was impressed; I’ve never had a toy that did that before! It went quiet when not in contact with skin, which definitely helped keep it discreet.”

Another reviewer agreed. “I really loved that it works by just touching your body—I cannot emphasize that enough,” they said. They noted that this feature made the toy “incredibly sexy” to use during solo and partnered play, as they didn’t have to pause a session to turn it on and off.

While Women’s Health testers also loved the Dame Aer and Lelo Sona 2 Cruise, they ultimately found that these toys—along with many other suction vibrators—were louder than the Womanizer’s model, which makes the Premium 2 stand out. That said, one reviewer wished the Premium 2 were more compact. “It’s definitely on the larger side, so probably not one you want to pack on an overnight trip, but it’s still certainly a bedside staple,” they said. “I loved it.”

G-spot vibrators are pretty self-explanatory: They’re toys designed to target the G-spot, or the erogenous zone located about one to two inches deep in the vaginal canal. But shopping for a G-spot vibrator can be slightly harder. Our reviewers found many products to be too girthy, or not girthy enough, to be fully satisfying. But one tester noted that the Hot Octopuss Kurve—which has an insertable length of five months and a tapered, soft head—was large enough to feel good, but not too intimidating.

“The Kurve is the closest feeling I’ve experienced to actual partnered penetrative sex,” raved one Women’s Health editor. They specifically loved the vibrator’s “rolling” sensations, which “felt like a massage chair for my vagina—it sounds weird, but was incredible.” The tester also loved how quiet the vibrator was, especially for such a powerful toy.

In addition to having a whopping 25 vibration combinations (!) and being whisper-quiet, the Kurve is fully waterproof—and a bit more ergonomic than other options (like the Je Joue Juno and the Dame Arc), according to WH’s reviewers.

Wearable vibrators are toys specifically designed and marketed to stay in place during solo or partnered sex. And of the wearable vibrators that WH editors tested, our team found Dame’s Eva to be the best option for those who want a hands-free experience. “Her wings tuck under your labia and stay there, so the body of it is vibrating on your clitoris,” explains Richmond. It might not work as well for people “with vulvas with very small labia,” she adds, but for most people, it stays in place—making this one of the best wearable vibrators on the market, and a great toy for people seeking clitoral stimulation during partnered sex.

Compared with other wearable vibrators, like the We-Vibe Sync, the Eva felt comfortable and intuitive to one Women’s Health editor. “This is definitely the most out-of-the-way wearable vibrator I’ve used,” they said. “I liked that it had just one button to turn it on, increase intensity, and turn it off. This made it very easy to change intensity levels during use.”

Our reviewer also praised the vibrator’s long battery life, and shared that they’ll keep this in their rotation for partnered sex. That said, they wished the vibrations were stronger—although they noted that the three intensity-level options might be perfect for other users.

Women’s Health editors and contributors tested more than 50 vibrators from trusted sex toy brands, considering the following criteria:

The first question our reviewers considered when testing each vibrator was what type of physical contact typically turns them on and how well a given toy could replicate that feeling. “How do you orgasm? For a lot of people, that’s going to be direct clitoral stimulation,” says Richmond. Testers who preferred clitoral stimulation and/or were still figuring out what they liked started with some kind of clitoral vibrator that stimulates the vulva externally, Mintz recommends. Reviewers who said they usually had their best orgasms when something (or someone) was penetrating them tested insertable G-spot vibrators instead. And those who love simultaneous external and internal stimulation—specifically, the feeling of being penetrated while having their clitoris touched—tested dual-stimulation toys, like rabbit vibrators.

Types of Vibrators

Bullet Vibrator

These small, cylindrical toys offer external clitoral stimulation that feels buzzy. They’re a great travel-friendly option because they’re so compact and discreet.

Wand Vibrator

Wands are on the larger side, but powerful. They generate rumbly sensations that can be applied to the clitoris, says Richmond.

Suction Vibrator

This is another clitoral toy. But rather than providing buzzy or rumbly vibrations, suction vibrators stimulate the clit via gentle air pulsations, mimicking the feeling of oral sex.

G-Spot Vibrator

A G-spot vibrator is exactly what it sounds like: a penetrative toy designed to, well, hit your G-spot.

Rabbit Vibrator

Rabbits have two arms that provide external, clitoral stimulation and internal, G-spot stimulation at once. The clitoral arm sometimes resembles a bullet; other times, it features two vibrating nubs that look like bunny ears.

Dual-Stimulation Vibrator

A dual-stimulation vibrator is any toy that delivers sensations to the clit and the G-spot at once. Rabbits can fall into this category—but so can toys that offer a different kind of clitoral stimulation, like air pulsations.

Once our testers determined their preferred type of stimulation, they got even more specific when assessing the type of sensations each toy offered. Many people get off from clitoral contact—but do they prefer the rumbly vibrations typical of a wand, or the buzzy feeling of a bullet? Or those who love the feeling of receiving oral sex might opt for a clitoral suction vibrator, says Richmond.

Also, our testers considered how pinpointed and precise they like their clitoral stimulation to be. “Do you like it very direct, just on your clitoris, in which case you might want a smaller or a suction-based vibrator that’s targeted to the clitoris?” says Richmond. “Or do you get more stimulated from coverage over your vulva, in which case you might want something a little bigger?”

Our reviewers who tested G-spot and/or rabbit vibrators also took into account the width and length of the penetrative arm. When shopping for an internal sex toy, you can always consider your own experiences with penetration from prior partners’ penises, dildos, or even fingers, says Laino. How much penetration typically feels good? Those who are unsure should try a smaller G-spot toy rather than a girthier one, says Laino.

Our reviewers only tested vibrators made of body-safe materials, including medical-grade silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel, Pyrex, and ABS plastic (for noninsertable parts). “Some materials are much safer for our bodies than others,” says Mintz. “High-quality, medical-grade silicone is not porous, whereas with some toys, you’ve got to be more careful.” Vibrators made from porous materials (like soft rubber) could harbor germs and bacteria, which could lead to painful infections, even if a toy is cleaned regularly.

Many rechargeable vibrators have a battery life of at least one hour, although some toys (like the Womanizer Premium 2) can last up to four hours without a charge. While trying each product, our testers discerned how long the toy could hold a charge, how long it took to charge, and the likelihood of its battery dying mid-masturbation session.

Relatively quiet vibrators are a must for people with roommates, kids, and/or thin walls. While testing, we prioritized discreet vibrators over loud ones; many reviewers compared a vibrator's noise level to others they tested, or have tried in the past. On a related note, many of our testers also preferred vibrators that were easy to stow away or pack for travel, as opposed to bulkier products that took up more space.

Not every product is labeled as a waterproof or splash-proof toy, but many are. Our reviewers put these vibrators to the test in the shower and bath, in order to identify which ones actually hold up in water.

Our team tested vibrators with just three or four speeds and settings, as well as vibrators with unlimited settings. Ultimately, our testers found that the quality of the settings mattered more than the quantity of options—but in some cases, reviewers found that even the strongest speeds weren't sufficient.

Some vibrators can be complicated, so our testers answered a multitude of questions about how straightforward each product was. Was the toy easy to hold and intuitive to use? Were the buttons accessible? Was it seamless to incorporate this vibrator into partnered sex? Was anything about it confusing or uncomfortable? Only the toys that received positive responses earned spots on our list.

Finally, our testers answered the most important question: Did this product feel good, and will they use it again? It's safe to say that all of the vibrators on this list passed the Women's Health vibe check (pun intended).

Over the past seven months, Women’s Health editors, including love and life editor Lydia Wang and lifestyle director Lindsay Geller, have been researching the bestselling, most popular vibrators for women based on thousands of product reviews and sex therapist recommendations. After identifying the best products of every type and for every budget, our team gathered more than 50 product samples from top-quality brands such as Lelo, We-Vibe, Dame, Magic Wand, Womanizer, and more.

We then tapped 13 Women’s Health editors and professional sex toy reviewers to test out toys from their favorite categories and share their thoughts on which products were the best. Our testers tried the products alone, with partners, and in the shower/bath (if the toy was waterproof) in order to identify the best vibrators for different purposes.

After reading through 32 reviews of our testers’ favorite vibrators, we identified the best product in each category, along with seven runners-up for users with specific preferences, needs, and budgets. Our final products were then vetted by sex therapist and psychotherapist Rachel Wright, LMFT.

How do I keep my vibrator clean?

“With any vibrator you’re using, you’re going to want to make sure you’re cleaning it after every session,” Richmond explains. A dirty vibrator can hold bacteria and germs—which, needless to say, can seriously kill the mood.

If you don’t have a sex toy-specific cleanser on hand, you can always use mild soap and warm water to clean your products, says Mintz. Some toys are even dishwasher-safe. But she recommends investing in an ultra-gentle cleanser that’s designed for sex toys. Plus, she notes, they’re easy to use: “You spray them on, leave them to sit, and then wipe them off.” Just make sure your toy is fully dry before you put it away.

Finally, if you have a collection of products, store them separately, Mintz warns. If you forget to clean one vibrator and then toss it in a bag with several other sex toys, the germs and bacteria can spread to your other products.

Where should I buy a vibrator?

Sex-positive, sex toy-specific online stores such as Babeland and Good Vibrations are always great places to start, says Mintz. “I would recommend going to a reputable sex shop that has [customer] reviews,” she suggests.

Depending on where you live, you might also opt to shop for a product in person, says Laino. “It can be a really fun experience to go to a sex store and look at toys,” she explains, adding that it can also be a great bonding activity with a group of friends or a partner.

Are vibrators worth the cost?

High-quality vibrators can be expensive—often, over $100—but there’s a reason you’re shelling out the big bucks. “In general, I would say splurge for a pricier vibrator,” Richmond explains. “Quality control can make a really big difference, and spending a little bit more money is probably going to mean your vibrator will last longer, and have more functional capabilities.”

Generally speaking, expensive products are usually made from better, more body-safe materials. They also have more special features that will seriously enhance your playtime. “With something cheap, the material might be porous, and it might have only one speed or two,” says Richmond. “Something more expensive will be less porous, maybe waterproof, and have more functionality with speeds, Bluetooth connections, things like that.”

Ultimately, “a good-quality vibrator from a good-quality company is a good investment,” says Mintz. That said, it’s okay to try a few mid-priced toys of different categories before splurging on your new go-to luxury product, she adds.

How do I use a vibrator?

To be clear, there’s no one way to use a vibrator. You don’t even have to use it on your genitals, says Laino. But here are a few ways you can make the most of your playtime, according to experts.

1. Set the scene.

Ahead of partnered sex, you might establish the mood: Light some candles, dim the lights, turn on a sultry playlist. Why not do this before solo play too? “First, find a place and time to relax,” says Laino. “And think about things that are sexy to you.” Your brain is your biggest sex organ, so feeling at ease and worry-free will help you have the best possible time with your new toy, she says.

2. Have lube handy.

“Sometimes, just putting a vibrator on your clitoris can be uncomfortable,” Laino says. Using a bit of lubricant can help make the experience more, well, smooth. Just be sure to use a water-based product, as silicone lube can cause microtears in silicone-based toys. You'll also want to avoid any lube that contains irritants like glycerin, petrochemicals, nonoxynol-9, and preservatives.

3. Explore your erogenous zones.

When using a vibrator, many people head straight to their genitals, says Laino. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, she recommends exploring your body (or your partner’s!) with the toy. “Remember that sexual pleasure can be [felt] all over the body,” says Laino. A few places to try: your nipples, belly, even the backs of your knees.

4. Figure out what feels good.

Some people might want to hold their toy directly against their clit, but for other users, that sensation could be too intense. If you’re sensitive, you can use your vibrator over your underwear, or even place a washcloth or bedsheet between your body and the toy to dull the feeling, says Laino.

Want more intensity? Try pressing your vibrator to the upper-left quadrant of your clitoris. It’s “a tiny little millimeter of an area,” but it’s the most sensitive part of the clit, notes Richmond. (The more you know!)

Once you’ve found just the right spot, start off with one of the toy’s lower speeds, then go higher, suggests Laino. “A lot of times, people will say, ‘[Masturbating] feels really good, but then I don’t know what to do,’” she notes. “At that point, if it feels really good, turn the speed up. And rock your pelvis area—move your pelvic region so you’re in rhythm [with the toy], which can help you have an orgasm.”

5. Bring your vibe into the shower.

Not every toy is waterproof, but if yours is, bring it into the bath or shower. Some people find the sensation of water on their skin erotic, says Laino, which can heighten your masturbation session.

On the flip side, water can also dull the intensity of a toy’s vibrations. “One of the reasons many people don’t like to have sex or use a vibrator in water is because it’s harder to feel things—but for somebody who is very sensitive, it could actually work to their benefit,” Laino adds. It’s all about your personal preferences.

6. Incorporate your toy into partnered sex.

While some toys are specifically designed to be used during partnered sex (hello, hands-free vibrators!), it’s important to remember that any vibrator can be a couples’ vibrator, says Mintz. And no partner should feel threatened by your desire to use a vibrator during sex.

If you’re initiating a conversation about bringing a toy into partnered sex, Laino recommends broaching the topic with a curious—or even flirtatious—tone. You might say: “Hey, I think using a vibrator during sex would be really fun for us. What do you think?”

You can use your toy on your partner, too—even if they have a penis. Try gently teasing their shaft or nipples with your vibe, Laino suggests.
